The sinking of the Empress of Ireland is Canada’s most deadly maritime tragedy. Idées au cube designed and produced a show that allows the audience to relive the boat’s last hours of navigation and its sinking in the St. Lawrence River, through the use of period documents, animation and video simulations.
The show begins with the broadcasting of newsreel. This series of vignettes made from archival images takes the audience back to the dawn of the 20th century, giving the required context before the show begins.
To simulate the Empress of Ireland moving down the river, its collision with the Storstad and the sinking, model boats were filmed. These images were incorporated into other video images and then enhanced with animation to recreate the environment realistically.
Designed as teaching tools, other productions for the Site historique maritime de la Pointe-au-Père present and explain the era of the Empress of Ireland.
With the 100th anniversary of the sinking drawing near, Idées au cube designed and produced a travelling kiosk, multimedia productions and a commemorative passport for a fascinating exhibit that the Site historique maritime de la Pointe-au-Père is presenting across Canada.
